A former wrestling champion and All-State football player at Coral Springs High School was arrested last week for carrying a concealed firearm in his car, court records show.
Willy Volmar, 20, of 8219 Shadow Wood Blvd., was driving his black Honda Civic in the 1900 block of Riverside Drive on Aug. 20 when Coral Springs Police pulled him over, according to an arrest affidavit.
Officers said the Civic’s tag light was out, so they pulled close to the car to look at the plate, records show. When they ran the tag number through their computer system, they found it was linked to a driver whose license was suspended.
Volmar, the driver, admitted to keeping a gun in the car, records show.
Inside the Civic, police found a black Beretta APX semiautomatic pistol loaded with seven rounds, plus one in the chamber, according to the affidavit.
Records show that Volmar had kept the gun in a strapless holster in a pocket compartment on the driver’s side door. He did not have a concealed carry permit and said the Beretta belonged to a friend who had recently been in the Civic, police said.
The onetime preps sports star told officers he kept the gun in his car for “personal protection,” had not been aware of Florida’s concealed carry rules, and “believed he could operate his vehicle with the gun near him,” the affidavit states.
Records show Volmar was charged with carrying a concealed firearm, driving with a suspended license, violating a driver’s license restriction, and driving without a tag light. He was booked into the Broward Main Jail and released on a $1,000 bond.
Volmar was a heavyweight champion on Coral Springs High School’s wrestling team and a standout defensive player on the school’s football team, earning All-State honors in 2021.
