On Wednesday, the Coral Springs Commission recognized the long-time resident José “Joe” Morera as the recipient of the 2025 Coral Springs Martin Luther King Jr. Monument Award.
Morera, a city leader and former 2024 candidate for commission, has dedicated his life to volunteering and active leadership in Coral Springs since 1997.
For the past 27 years, the first-generation Cuban American has continued to promote a culture of civic leadership and social progression through community service. His relentless contributions to Coral Springs’ social and economic growth over the past two decades are impressive.
Some examples of his remarkable role and accomplishments for the city’s improvement include: an 11-year term as President of the Sunshine Water Control District and his presidency of the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts. Morera also took on an essential role as vice chair of the Coral Springs Planning and Zoning Board and Charter Review Committee.
He also went on to win the 2022 Lynne Johnson Award for “Enhancing the Lives of Coral Springs Residents.” He spent 25 years of service on the Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee, promoting inclusivity and diversity through his efforts to engage with community members.
Through his passion for paying it forward, Morera has shown endless respect to the city’s diverse population and the various ethnic backgrounds they represent.
Coral Springs Mayor Scott J. Brook personally thanked Morera for his friendship and part in establishing the town’s overall development through his consistent role in local government and participation in social events.
“Joe is such a blessing to our community,” said Mayor Brook. “Pretty much anytime I am able to ask him for help with this or that, he’s a yes man, an idea person, he’s a leader, and he’s a good friend. I am so proud of you and happy to call you my friend.”
Commissioner Josh Simmons and MLK Liaison also spoke about the resident. “He has given a lot to this city, shared Commissioner Simmons. “And we are proud to honor him today.”
Accepting the award, Morera thanked the MLK committee, commissioner, and community for recognizing his hard work.
“In all honesty, it is a tremendous honor and pleasure,” expressed Morera. “I am very, very humbled to be the recipient of this award. It means the world to me that my community and such an esteemed committee honors me with this. There’s one saying on the monument that I always say: “It’s always a good time to do the right thing.”
