The City of Coral Springs City Commission unanimously approved a series of resolutions aimed at protecting public safety and preserving local governance as part of the city’s ongoing legislative advocacy efforts.
According to a statement, the actions reflect a continued commitment to ensuring state legislation does not negatively affect Coral Springs residents or businesses. The commission and city staff are working closely with legislative leaders to advocate for policies that safeguard local interests.
The commission voted to oppose House Bill 145, which would increase statutory liability limits for tort claims against local governments. Current Florida law caps damages in negligence cases involving cities, counties, and school districts. City leaders warned that raising those limits could expose municipalities to significantly higher financial risk and potentially divert taxpayer dollars away from essential services, including public safety, infrastructure, and community programs.
Commissioners also opposed House Bill 209, which would increase the homestead exemption by $200,000 for all ad valorem taxes except school district levies. While the city supports tax relief initiatives, officials said the proposal would substantially reduce ad valorem tax revenue and erode local home rule authority, limiting the city’s ability to fund critical services and respond to community needs.
In addition, the commission approved a resolution supporting House Bill 321 and Senate Bill 406, legislation designed to enhance public safety by establishing prohibited locations for carrying firearms. The measures would restrict firearm possession in sensitive areas such as courthouses, schools, police stations, commission chambers, and polling places by removing prior language that allowed concealed weapons in those locations.
City leaders expressed appreciation to Tina Polsky and Christine Hunschofsky for sponsoring and advancing the public safety legislation, according to the statement.
Each resolution authorizes the city clerk to transmit the adopted measures to the appropriate legislative and governmental entities.
City officials said Coral Springs will continue monitoring state legislation and advocating for policies that protect residents, support public safety, and preserve local decision-making authority.
