Taina Jones {BSO}
A Coral Springs city employee who serves as the city’s pension coordinator was arrested early Wednesday on DUI charges after police found her driving a damaged SUV on bare metal rims along Royal Palm Boulevard, court records say.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, officers stopped Taina Jones, 38, as she drove a gray 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe around 3:15 a.m. in the 11200 block of Royal Palm Boulevard after they spotted the SUV traveling with its front and rear driver-side tires completely off the wheels.
Police said the metal rims were grinding against the roadway, creating a loud noise that drew officers’ attention while they were handling an unrelated call nearby.
Jones, of Coral Springs, was the only person in the SUV, police said. Officers noted visible damage to the front and rear passenger-side doors. Jones told police the damage was old, though police said it appeared fresh based on the markings, the report states.
Officers said Jones appeared to be disoriented with slurred speech and looked like she had been crying beforehand, according to the document.
Jones told officers she had “popped” a tire and was “just trying to make it home” from dinner, according to the report. Officers noted it was around 3 a.m. at the time and that both the front and rear driver-side tires were damaged, not just the front tire as Jones claimed, the document states.
Police said they ordered Jones out of the vehicle to begin a DUI investigation. Officers said in their report that she stumbled while exiting, was not wearing shoes, and could not remember where her shoes were.
Jones refused to participate in standardized field sobriety exercises, police said, and later refused to provide breath, blood, or urine samples. Officers said she struggled to walk without assistance and was escorted to a patrol vehicle.
Jones was arrested on charges of driving under the influence (first offense) and refusal to submit to breath, blood, or urine testing. She was also cited for a traffic offense for allegedly causing damage to the roadway with the SUV’s bare rims.
She was transported to the Coral Springs Police Department, then to Broward Health Coral Springs, police said. She was later transferred to the Broward County Main Jail and released on a $1,500 bond Wednesday, court records show.
Jones could not immediately be reached for comment.
Coral Springs officials said she has been placed on leave.
“Her current employment status is on leave pending further investigation,” city spokesperson Lynne Martzall said.
