
Coral Glades Baseball Team. {David Volz}
Coral Glades and J.P. Taravella faced off in multiple sports over the past week, with both schools picking up wins.
The Jaguars won the opening game, defeating the Trojans 7-6 in extra innings on March 12. JPT jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring a run in the first inning and two more in the third. However, Coral Glades answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and took their first lead in the fifth after scoring three more.
J.P. Taravella tied the game an inning later and then took a one-run lead in the eighth inning, but Coral Glades responded with two runs in the bottom half to win 8-7. Sebastian Duran led off the inning with a walk and later came around to score on an error after Shawn Whoriskey attempted to lay down a bunt. Whoriskey ended up on third base and scored the winning run on Rinaldi’s bunt single.
Rinaldi also earned the win on the mound, tossing three innings of relief after Logan Miller pitched the first five innings. Alex Vizquel led JPT with three RBIs before the two teams met again in a tournament this week, with J.P Taravella recording a 6-2 win. Each team scored two runs in the first before the Trojans added two in the second and then two more later on to record their 10th win of the season.
JPT had three different players drive in runs, along with four pitchers making appearances on the mound. Next, they will play American Heritage High School on Tuesday, March 24, at 6:30 p.m.
Coral Glades had already won two games in the tournament, knocking off Palm Beach Central and American Heritage High School. The Jaguars will play Piper High School in their next game on Tuesday, March 24, at 6 p.m. before facing Coral Springs High School the following day. The Colts have three straight after starting the season 10-1, Coral Springs Charter holds a 5-8 record this year and has lost four of its last five games.
In flag football, Coral Glades earned a 34-6 win over the J.P. Taravella. Noel Thomas threw three touchdown passes for the Jaguars, while Madison Watts returned an interception for a score. The Jaguars lost their other two games this week, falling 27-0 to Marjory Stoneman Douglas and 15-7 to Dillard High School on Thursday, dropping to 3-7. They will play Cypress Bay High School next on March 24 at 4:30 p.m.
J.P. Taravella is 2-5 this season, with its only wins coming against Blanche Ely and Charles W. Flanagan High School. The Trojans will play Coral Springs Charter on March 24 at 4 p.m. The Panthers come in with a perfect 7-0 record, while Coral Springs High School is 3-5 and is coming off a win over Plantation High School.
