Coral Springs Charter graduate Brianna Godfrey is set for the final stop of her collegiate softball career, having committed to the University of North Carolina for her senior season.
Her move to Chapel Hill also reunites her with a familiar face. Godfrey began her college career at
Marshall University, where she played under head coach Megan Smith Lyon.
Lyon was recently hired as North Carolina's head coach, giving Godfrey the opportunity to finish her career with the same coach who originally recruited her out of high school.
“Committing to UNC is an incredibly exciting and meaningful moment for me, Godfrey said. “ It’s something I’ve dreamed about for a long time, so to finally be in this position feels really special and honestly a little surreal. I feel extremely blessed and grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a respected program.”
One of the most accomplished players in
Coral Springs Charter history, Godfrey played on the varsity team beginning in sixth grade and finished her high school career with 60 victories in the circle. She posted a remarkable 0.67 ERA while recording 32 complete games, 16 shutouts, seven no-hitters and two perfect games. At the plate, she hit .450 with seven home runs and 86 RBIs, showcasing her ability as a two-way standout.
Godfrey helped lead the Panthers to four consecutive state championships before continuing her career at Marshall. During her freshman season, she earned Sun Belt All-Tournament Team honors, collecting 19 hits and scoring 18 runs while helping the Thundering Herd win 20 games.
She later transferred to the
University of Maryland, where she earned her first collegiate victory against San Diego, finished third on the team in ERA, and threw a complete-game shutout against UMBC. As a junior, Godfrey made 90.1 innings in the circle and won six games, while becoming a key contributor for the Terrapins.
After missing the entire 2026 season due to an injury, Godfrey now has the opportunity to return for one final collegiate campaign with the Tar Heels. North Carolina is coming off a 32-19 season that included an NCAA Tournament appearance and a tournament victory over Howard University.
"Bri has always loved playing for Coach Smith," Coral Springs Charter Head Coach
Mark Montimurro said. "It's a true testament to the type of ballplayer and person she is for a college head coach to recruit her not once, but twice."
Godfrey knew right away that when she stepped on campus, it immediately felt like home.
“There was just something about the environment, the people, and the energy that made it feel right from the start. The support staff is like no other—they truly care about the athletes as people first, and that stood out to me in a big way.”
As Godfrey enters the final season of her collegiate career, she is also looking ahead to life after softball. While she is still determining her long-term career path, she hopes to remain involved in athletics, with a strong interest in performance training and sports science.
Her goal is to work with athletes, helping them maximize their development and reach their full potential both on and off the field.
