The Coral Springs Charter boys and girls swim teams performed well at the 2A state championship on November 7 in Ocala.
The boys’ team placed eighth overall out of 52 schools, an improvement from last year’s 20th place.
The Panthers earned 15 medals, according to Coach Sheri Wells-Smith.
The boys’ 200 medley relay placed fifth at the finals and received a medal. Team members included Anthony Palumbo, John Albornoz, Brian Hamilton, and Christopher Chaison.
The girls’ 200 medley placed 16th. Team members included Mariana Montes, Addison Palumbo, Alejandra Gil-Restrepo, and Jameela Rashad.
John Albornoz was runner-up in the 200 individual medley and seventh in the 100 breaststroke, earning a medal in both events.
Brian Hamilton earned a medal by finishing fifth in the 50 freestyle and came in 14th in the 100 freestyle.
Alejandra Gil Restrepo placed 16th in the 500-meter freestyle.
Mariana Montes placed ninth in the 100 backstroke.
The girls’ 400 freestyle relay placed sixth, and the boys’ 400 freestyle relay placed ninth.
Disability swimmer Faith Moberg swam the 50 and 100 freestyle and placed first in both events.
“Faith made history by being the very first disability swimmer to become a state champion at her level in the state of Florida for FHSAA Swimming, and first state champion for Coral Springs Charter,” said Wells-Smith.
She believes the team has a bright future. “We are really excited for next year, and I am confident we will be returning to the state championship,” said Wells-Smith.
The Panthers swimmers who made it to the state championship this year range from 8th through 11th grade, with only two seniors, said Wells-Smith.
“I’m extremely proud of our swim team! We witnessed amazing growth, dedication to teamwork, and unforgettable fun while cheering on our swimmers. This was a championship to remember,” said Wells-Smith.
