The Coral Springs Charter boys’ and girls’ swim teams have performed well throughout the season. The teams have been competing in meets and practicing at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.
On September 24, Charter competed against Coral Glades in a meet that was shortened due to lightning issues. The Charter Panther girls won their division, and the Glades Jaguars boys won their meet. However, the combined scores from both teams gave Charter an overall victory of 109 to 91, according to coach Sheri Wells-Smith.
She is proud of the Panthers’ swimmers and said that many of the juniors and seniors have been on the team since the sixth grade.
A highlight of the meet was the Charter girls’ medley, which earned first place. Members include Mariana Montes, Alejandra Gil-Restrepo, Adalyn Gardner, and Jameela Rashad. The Charter boys’ medley earned second place. Members include Brian Hamilton, John Alboroz, Daniel Gil-Restrepo, and Chris Chaison.
“We have nine seniors, and our team is successful because we are like a family. Our team members have been together for many years, and last year, we took ten swimmers to the state championship. This year, we plan to do the same,” said Wells-Smith.
She is also proud of her assistant coach, Hailey Wells, who swam for Charter for six years and has coached at the school for four years. Now the Panthers are preparing for the BCAA championship and the district meet.
