In only his third appearance in the major leagues, former Coral Springs Charter pitcher Tommy Romero picked up his first career win.
The 2015 graduate from CSC achieved with the Tampa Bay Rays in their 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Romero pitched a 1-2-3 six-inning, retiring Frenchy Cordero via the strikeout and both Kevin Plawecki and Jackie Bradley Jr. on groundouts.
Following the scoreless frame, the Red Sox scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and held on for a 5-4 win.
“It was awesome,” said Romero. “It was probably the most fun I’ve had since being up here. Coming back here made it feel more real. They need me now, so it just feels better to be up here the second time.”
Romero made his MLB debut with the Rays earlier this season and recorded his first big league strikeout. During his varsity career, he was a star for the Panthers, winning eight games and striking out 58 hitters. He then went on to play college baseball at Eastern Florida before being selected in the 15th round of the 2017 MLB draft.
