Coral Springs Commissioner Joshua Simmons has been appointed chair of the National League of Cities’ Federal Advocacy Committee for Transportation and Infrastructure Services, a national role that will position him to help guide federal policy discussions on transportation funding, infrastructure improvements and mobility initiatives.
In this position, Simmons will lead local officials from across the country in developing and promoting federal policy recommendations. NLC’s advocacy committees serve as key channels through which cities, towns and villages relay priorities to Congress and the presidential administration.
“Local governments are the backbone of America’s infrastructure system — from the roads people drive on to the transit systems they rely on and the stormwater networks keeping neighborhoods safe,” Simmons said in a statement. He added that he looks forward to representing municipalities during a period he described as critical for long-term planning and investment.
Simmons has served in various roles on NLC committees since 2020, including a recent term as vice chair of the same transportation committee. His work on transportation issues in Coral Springs includes advocating for long-term planning and mobility improvements. During his seven years on the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization board, he worked on efforts that secured nearly $10 million in transportation and mobility projects for the city and supported regional initiatives aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity.
Simmons, a former teacher and community advocate, was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2018. He has focused his local work on public safety, infrastructure, and community development. His appointment places him among the municipal leaders contributing to national discussions on roads, transit, airports, broadband deployment and infrastructure funding.
