Christel Louidor saw Nancy Metayer Bowen as a mentor.
Louidor, a Florida Atlantic University student, worked with Metayer to advocate for the Haitian community and learned from her.
“Metayer was a pillar in the community and advocated for the Haitian community. She wrote letters of recommendation for me,” said Louidor.
She joined political and community leaders at a walk honoring the late Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, who was killed in a shooting at her home earlier in the week.
Mayor Scott Brook led the event, which began at the Coral Springs Peace Garden and ended at the Coral Springs Museum of Art on April 4.
A group including local commissioners, community leaders, students, and residents participated in the walk, discussing their memories of Metayer Bowen as they went.
Brook encouraged people to express their grief, telling the audience, “It is OK not to be OK. We have to go through the grief process.”
Commissioner Joe McHugh said, “Nancy was a kind spirit, selfless, and a great person.”
After the walk, the group assembled in front of the Museum, by the large artistic chair. Brook encouraged people to come forward and share memories of Metayer Bowen. Those who spoke described her as a kind spirit, a shining light, a selfless person, and a good friend.
Jack Donaldson, described as both a resident and friend of Metayer Bowen, said, “She was an advocate for Haiti, women’s rights, and a great person.”
