Diego Mendez {GoFundMe}
Coral Springs residents are coming together to support 18-year-old Diego Mendez, a local soccer player recently diagnosed with two brain tumors.
The tumors, located in both the frontal and posterior regions of his brain, have already required a biopsy and a shunt to relieve pressure affecting his eyesight, according to his family’s GoFundMe page.
Diego is now undergoing chemotherapy in preparation for further surgery, the page states.
“At such a young age, no one should have to face this battle, but Diego has shown incredible strength and courage through every step,” the campaign organizers wrote. “Now, more than ever, he needs our support of family, friends, and our community to help him through treatments and recovery through this long road ahead.”
The Mendez family has deep roots in Coral Springs. Jose Mendez, Diego’s father, has volunteered for years as a soccer coach, mentoring young athletes in the area, and served in the U.S. Army.
Jose’s wife, Paula Bedoya Mendez, is also active in the community, known for her work supporting local families and youth programs.
“Over the years, they have given endlessly their time, love, and resources,” the campaign organizers wrote.
The fundraiser has raised more than $27,000 from 292 donors as of Sunday afternoon.
Contributions are helping cover Diego’s medical care, including surgeries, chemotherapy, and related treatment expenses, organizers said.
