Two men were arrested after police say a traffic crash investigation escalated into death threats and an attempted escape from officers who were forced to tase them.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, officers were responding to a crash with injuries near West Sample Road and Terrapin Lane on December 30 when Eduardo Josue Gonzalez, 20, of North Lauderdale, arrived at the scene in a separate vehicle.
Police say Gonzalez was not involved in the crash but became visibly upset and began making derogatory remarks toward the driver believed to be at fault. Investigators said Gonzalez threatened the driver, allegedly stating that if police were not present, he would shoot him.
Officers repeatedly ordered Gonzalez and another man, identified as Beder Arevalo Villalobos, 48, to leave the scene. Police say both men ignored multiple lawful commands to get in their car and vacate the area.
When officers attempted to take Gonzalez into custody, police say he resisted, pushed an officer in the chest, and ran to his red Ford pickup truck. Officers pursued him as he entered the vehicle and attempted to flee. During the struggle, Gonzalez allegedly placed the truck into drive, causing it to move toward officers, fire rescue personnel, and bystanders at the scene.
Officers deployed a Taser and, with the assistance of additional units, were able to remove Gonzalez from the vehicle and place him under arrest after a brief struggle. He was transported to a hospital for medical clearance before being taken to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $4,500 bond.
Gonzalez was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, and failure to register a motor vehicle.
Police say Villalobos was also arrested at the scene after refusing to comply with orders to leave and approaching first responders despite warnings. He was charged with obstruction without violence and approaching a first responder after being warned.
