A man is facing a first-degree arson charge after allegedly pouring gasoline throughout his family’s Coral Springs home and igniting it with a lighter while several relatives were inside.
A Coral Springs Police Department incident report shows that on May 1, officers responded to a residential fire after a 911 caller reported that her son had intentionally set their home ablaze. The son was later identified as Jacquila Oneuil, 29, of Coral Springs.
The report has redacted the address where the incident occurred, but Oneuil has a listed residence near the 3900 block of Northwest 73rd Way.
The caller, the Oneuil’s mother, told 911 dispatch that she was in her bedroom when she heard screams of “Don’t do that!” She exited her room to find her son pouring gasoline throughout the living room and onto the floor.
She told police she smelled a strong odor of gasoline as Oneuil shouted, “Everybody out.” Once all family members had exited the residence, she reported seeing her son bend down and ignite the gas with a small lighter at the front door, causing flames to spread throughout the home quickly.
Oneuil’s brother and another resident told investigators they saw puddles of gasoline inside the house and were warned to evacuate moments before the blaze began. Four family members were inside at the time but escaped without injury.
According to the report, the mother had given the Oneuil $20 earlier that evening to buy food. She later believed he used the money to purchase gasoline.
Police surveillance footage from a nearby Wawa gas station at 7305 West Sample Road confirmed the mother’s assumptions. The video shows her son allegedly inquiring about a gas can and purchasing $22 worth of fuel.
When taken into custody, Oneuil had a strong odor of gasoline on his body, and officers found a black lighter containing liquid in his pants pocket.
Investigators also noted in the report that Oneuil had a prior incident involving similar threats. On November 29, 2024, he was taken into protective custody under the Baker Act after reportedly threatening to burn the home down. During that incident, police also located him at the same Wawa station.
State Fire conducted a preliminary examination, and the fire’s cause was officially classified as “incendiary by human involvement.”
The home suffered severe damage, particularly in the living room, and is now considered uninhabitable due to fire and smoke damage.
Oneuil was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
