Nearly 300 children under the age of five drown in swimming pools across the country each year.
By organizing Water Safety Day, the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department hopes to significantly reduce the number of such incidents in their community.
Held on Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cypress Park Pool, located at 1300 Coral Springs Dr. Residents of all ages are encouraged to attend and participate in the various activities planned for the day.
Water Safety Day aims to educate the community about the potential dangers of swimming and provide essential knowledge to prevent accidents. The event will feature a combination of educational and entertaining components, ensuring an engaging experience for attendees. Highlights include swim safety activities, CPR awareness demonstrations, music, and exciting prizes.
Chief Michael McNally of the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department expressed his concerns about the alarming number of drowning incidents involving young children.
“Sadly, in the State of Florida, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of five, and the cities of Coral Springs and Parkland have not been immune to this preventable tragedy,” he said. “As a first responder and father, it is one of my greatest priorities to reinforce the importance of swim safety.”
To further promote water safety, local representatives will be present at the event to distribute Water Smart Broward Swim coupons. These coupons can be redeemed for free or low-cost swim lessons at local pool facilities.
Additionally, medical experts will be on-site to provide attendees with valuable tips and resources on how to become CPR and First-Aid certified, ensuring they are well-prepared to respond in emergency situations.
