A fundraiser has been launched to fund an endowment in the name of slain Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer, with more than $32,000 raised toward a $250,000 goal as of Monday afternoon.
The Nancy Metayer Endowment for Justice, Equality and Resilience, established by Metayer’s family and friends, will be a permanent endowment that carries forward the values that defined her life and public service, according to the GoFundMe campaign.
Organizers say the effort will also provide immediate financial relief to Metayer’s loved ones as they grieve her death at the hands of her alleged killer, husband Stephen Bowen, in what police say was an act of premeditated murder inside their Coral Springs home, where Metayer was found shot to death on April 1.
Metayer made history as the first Black and Haitian American woman elected as a city commissioner. First elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2024, she was appointed vice mayor in December 2024. Before entering public office, she worked as an environmental scientist focused on water quality, public health, and disaster response across Florida. She was a graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and Johns Hopkins University.
Family and supporters describe her as a leader guided by integrity, compassion, and a commitment to ensuring people felt “seen, heard, and valued,” according to the fundraiser. Her work spanned environmental stewardship, inclusion, and civic engagement.
Metayer’s death comes just months after the suicide of her brother Donovan, compounding what organizers describe as an “unimaginable” period of grief.
