Coral Springs High School graduate Max Lazar competed in the World Baseball Classic for Team Israel.
After not pitching in the opening game, an 11-3 loss to Venezuela, Lazar, a 2017 graduate of Coral Springs High School, made his debut in the eighth inning against Nicaragua on Sunday. He recorded the final two outs of the inning to help Israel secure its first win of the tournament, a 5-0 victory. They went on to win, recording a 6-2 victory over the Netherlands for their second win, but did not advance to the quarterfinals.
Lazar is currently a member of the Philadelphia Phillies and worked his way to the big leagues after a dominant baseball career. He played two years of high school baseball and excelled as a two-way player, posting a 15-4 record with an impressive 0.81 ERA while also hitting .357 at the plate.
Initially set to attend Florida Atlantic University, Lazar was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. He spent several seasons pitching in the Brewers’ organization before signing a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2023.
During his time in the minor leagues, Lazar recorded 18 wins while continuing to develop as a pitcher before earning his first call-up during the 2024 season. He has now pitched in 34 career MLB games, recording his first career win on July 25 against the Boston Red Sox. Lazar also has one save and two holds in his career while pitching to a 4.75 ERA.
