Olivia Higgins of the Coral Springs High School cross-country team came in fourth place at the Broward County Athletic Association County Championship at Markham Park on October 13, the highest place among Coral Springs area runners.
“I felt good about my performance, and I set a personal best with 20.12. Now I am looking forward to the district championship meet,” she said.
Her teammate, Matthew Wykpisz, came in seventh in the boys’ race. “It was a good race and I ran well today,” he said.
The Coral Springs High boys’ team finished in third place. Coach Khiro Hoilett said the Colts ran well, and he believes they will do well at the district championship in three weeks.
Marcus Gentilhomme came in 16th, and Tyler Cline came in 17th for the Colts.
Craig Dennis earned fifth place, and JahRee Pierre took 10th for Taravella. “I ran well and had a good finish. It was a hot day for a run,” said Dennis.
Their coach, Dawn Spann, was disappointed in the Trojans. She said the Trojan boys’ team could be the best in Broward County, but some of the runners did not perform as well as they could have. “We won the district championship last year, and we need to step up,” she said.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boys finished ninth, and Eagles runner Matthew Rosenberg finished 17th. Coral Springs Charter was 10th, and Coral Glades took 17th. Jaguars Fabio Castillo came in 14th.
In the girls’ race, Coral Springs Charter was fourth, Marjory Stoneman Douglas was fifth, Taravella was sixth, and Coral Springs was eighth.
Lily Richardson of Charter came in 13th, and Olivia Noel of Taravella was 15th.
“We had a good, solid day of running, and both the boys’ and girls’ teams ran well. Now we are preparing for the district championship. The course was not good and it had not been mowed,” said Charter’s coach Brantley Barr.
