The Coral Springs Police Department is pushing back against what it calls “significant inaccuracies and misleading information” following a misleading headline published by the Miami Herald about prior 911 calls at the home of slain Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer — a headline that was later changed after drawing criticism from readers.
According to the Miami New Times, the Herald initially published a headline suggesting a history of domestic violence-related 911 calls at Metayer’s Coral Springs home before revising it to more accurately reflect the nature of the incidents.
“Coral Springs police called to vice mayor’s home five times before her murder,” the paper’s online headline read. After readers on social media blasted the headline as misleading clickbait, editors updated it to read: “Five police calls made to vice mayor’s home before death; details remain unclear.”
In a public statement Friday, police said they had received an increase in public records requests from multiple media outlets seeking incident reports, supplemental reports, and calls for service at Metayer’s home, which she shared with her accused killer, husband Stephen Bowen, who allegedly shot her multiple times with a shotgun and has been charged with premeditated murder. After records were released, the department said some reporting incorrectly described prior calls as domestic violence-related. They did not call out The Herald by name.
“The Coral Springs Police Department has received an increase in public record requests from several media outlets requesting incident reports, supplemental reports, and all calls for service at the residence of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer,” the statement reads. “Once these requests were fulfilled, several media outlets reported significant inaccuracies and misleading information, stating that the prior 911 calls for service involving Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer were domestic violence-related.”
Police said the records show a different picture, and provided a detailed breakdown of each call for service connected to the home.
“November 13, 2023 – Disturbance
In this call for service a contractor and subcontractor got into a verbal argument over floor work being done on the staircase leading to the second floor. It was determined that this issue was civil in nature and did not involve Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer.”
“August 6, 2024 – Grand Theft
In this call for service, Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer reported a grand theft involving a contractor she hired.”
“April 15, 2025 – Animal Bite
In this call for service, Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer’s dog escaped from the residence and bit another dog within the neighborhood.”
“April 15, 2025 – Animal Bite
In this call for service, the primary officer from the previous animal bite call was conducting a follow-up investigation into the incident that he previously investigated.”
“April 17, 2025 – Investigation
In this call for service, the Coral Springs Police Department humane officer was conducting a follow-up investigation into the previous animal bite complaint from April 15, 2025.”
“April 1, 2026 – Homicide
In this call for service, the homicide investigation into Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer was reported, and her husband, Stephen Bowen, was arrested for first-degree murder.”
Police emphasized that “the only incident related to domestic violence was in fact the homicide investigation that was reported on April 1, 2026.”
“The City of Coral Springs/Coral Springs Police Department remains available to provide factual information and context to members of the media and public,” the statement concludes. “We value constructive dialogue and are committed to correcting the record when inaccuracies arise.”
Police continue to investigate Metayer’s killing.
