Coral Springs Charter softball is back after the Panthers picked up a season-opening 7-0 win against Western High School.
This is the 11th straight year CSC has started the season with a win and did so on a dominant pitching performance from Sophia Bertorelli. She took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a complete game shutout and 16 strikeouts.
“Sophia is as elite a pitcher as there is in the state,” said Head Coach Mark Montimurro. “She has patiently waited her turn. Now she’s ready to dominate.”
Offensively, Heather Robertson and Kate Maston hit home runs in the third inning, while Bella Bertorelli had an RBI single. Alivia Taibl and Bella then knocked in runs in the fourth before Adison Michel brought one in with a single in the fifth.
While it’s been four years since their last State Championship, Montimurro knows that is the ultimate goal.
“We need to stay the course and trust in our system,” Montimurro added. “Our pitching is elite, so we need to sure up some other areas if we want to challenge for another title.”
Next, CSC will play Oxbridge Academy on Monday, Feb. 27, at 4:30 p.m. The Thunderwolves won 17-0 in their first game and went 23-2-1 last year. They made it to the State Championship before falling to University Christian High School.
Also, former four-time State Champion and 2022 graduate Brianna Godfrey made her second appearance on the mound and her first start. She pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits and no earned runs in Marshall’s 12-2 win.
Earlier this season, Godfrey started at second base and got her first collegiate hit on Feb. 11 against Butler with a triple. She also scored her first run against Western Illinois and had two stolen bases against Maine.
