Dwayne Dixon has begun work as the new principal of Coral Springs High School. Previously he worked at Cypress Bay High School in Weston, where he served as an assistant principal for four years.
Dixon began work on January 24 and was impressed by the students and teachers he met. “During the meetings I attended, I was impressed by the positive energy among all the teachers and staff. This is a great high school,” he said.
According to Dixon, the students are his most important priority, and his goal is to help them in any way he can. “I wanted to be a high school principal because this is the best way I can help young people,” he said.
Dixon knows being a principal can be stressful, but he is willing to accept criticism and has tough skin.
He is focused on getting to know the students and teachers at CSHS. Dixon believes it is too early to make any changes.
“I want to be a collaborative leader. I listen to what students, teachers, and administrators tell me, and I want to be flexible.”
He is used to leading large groups of students and teachers and described his role at Cypress Bay as being a mini-principal.
Before Dixon became a principal, he served in various roles at Cooper City High School for approximately 14 years. He served as a teacher for AP U.S. History and Government & Economics and as a behavioral specialist, according to Cathleen Brennan, spokesperson for Broward County Public Schools.
Dixon earned a bachelor’s degree in education with a minor in Sociology from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 2007, Then earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from FAU in 2019. Principals are selected by review committees based on years of education and leadership experience, according to Brennan.
Dixon replaces Vivian Suarez, who retired from Coral Springs High School on December 30, 2023. According to the District, she had spent most of her 30 years in education at BCPS.
She said in a written statement, “It has been an honor to have been the principal of Coral Springs High School and to serve the students, parents, faculty, and staff. I want to thank the entire Coral Springs High School Community for their support and for the city for its commitment to ensuring academic excellence for all of our students.”
