David Schneider loves leading the Coral Springs Fire Pipes and Drums.
A captain with nearly 31 years of service in the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department, he plays drums at city and community events. For example, the group performed at the Blarney Bash in front of City Hall on March 6 and will play their next show at Runyons (9810 West Sample Road) on March 15, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
“Since 2008, I have been part of the pipes and drums, a group I love. As firefighters, we enjoy performing together,” said Schneider.
The pipes and drums are part of the honor guard, and they perform at funerals and other official city events. The group performs Irish music because firefighting has an Irish heritage.
“Years ago, when people were emigrating to the U.S. from Ireland, they would find work as firefighters. The Irish culture continues in many fire departments,” said Schneider.
To join the pipes and drums, one must dedicate significant effort and time to practice.
“Training someone to play the pipes generally takes about a year, while learning the drums usually requires less time,” Schneider noted.
After their performance at the most recent event, the pipes and drums members gathered to relax together. They also took the opportunity to watch the other performers.
