The J.P. Taravella High School chess team earned second place in the Chess4Life competition on March 7.
The team hosted the tournament, which was presented alongside Chess4Life, an organization that promotes chess in schools.
Gianfranco Carrillo, a leader on the Trojans’ chess team, was pleased with his team’s performance. “We have practiced and worked hard to learn the game of chess,” he said.
Taravella Assistant Principal Christopher Crossman was proud that his school could host the event. “This was a positive event for our school, and we hope to continue hosting chess tournaments,” he said.
Elliott Neff, the Executive Director of Chess4Life, said that chess is a good game for young people to learn because it teaches problem-solving skills. The tournament wrapped up on a positive note, highlighting the benefits of chess for students.
