Coral Springs High School celebrated some exciting basketball news as former standout Matthew Curprew-Elsy announced his commitment to Southern Union State College, while the current Colts also played in showcases.
He is officially signed with Lee University, is excited to commit, and feels it was the right sport for him after his visit.
“The coaches and players were welcoming, and I could see myself being part of the program,” Curprew-Elsy said. ” I’m thankful for everyone who’s helped me get to this point, and I’m looking forward to getting on campus and getting to work.”
A 2024 graduate, Curprew-Elsy played his junior season at Coral Glades High School, where he led the team in scoring with 10.1 points per game. He helped the Jaguars capture the school’s first district championship before transferring to Coral Springs High School for his senior season. In one memorable matchup, he helped the Colts defeat his former team.
Curprew-Elsy had an incredible senior season for the Colts, averaging 13.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. He helped lead CSHS to its first BCAA Title in school history and was named Most Valuable Player. He was also a First Team All-Broward County Selection and a Second Team All-State selection, helping the Colts win 21 games last year.
Curprew-Elsy spent the past two seasons at Southwestern Illinois College, where he enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign. He averaged 13.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game, earning the opportunity to continue his collegiate career at Southern Union State College.
Meanwhile, the current Coral Springs varsity squad recently competed in the GBCA Classic, opening the event with a thrilling 43-42 victory over Gainesville High School. The Colts dropped their next three contests, though two of the losses came by 10 points or fewer.
Earlier this summer, Coral Springs posted a 2-1 record at the Cardinal Gibbons Summer Camp, giving head coach Devin Barta another opportunity to see his team compete against quality opposition.
“The whole summer has been a great experience for our guys,” Barta said. “Getting to play in front of college coaches, building chemistry as a team, and just the off-the-court bonding—it has been a great June team camp month.”
The Colts will continue their summer schedule in the Harris Fall League before returning to the court this winter following a successful 19-9campaign last season. Coral Springs advanced to the District Final and qualified for the regional playoffs, where the Colts scored 83 points in a season-ending loss to Boyd H. Anderson High School.
