Jessica Lloyd {GoFundMe}
The family of a 38-year-old Coral Springs woman found dead in a canal near her home – and whose husband is under investigation in the case – has launched a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.
The campaign, which had raised more than $10,000 as of Saturday night, aims to raise enough money to cover memorial costs, trauma counseling, legal expenses, and domestic violence awareness efforts following the Aug. 25 death of Jessica Lloyd. Her death followed a domestic incident with her husband of 17 months, Jeffrey Ernest Evans II, 43.
Authorities received multiple 911 calls about Lloyd that night, including one from a neighbor who reported hearing her screaming that her husband was trying to kill her near their home at 9901 Northwest 15th Ct.
A police report states that Evans, who also phoned police that night, said he saw Lloyd “running from in between two houses … screaming for help” before she “fell in the middle of the street” and later vanished.
Evans reported that his wife was “experiencing a ‘mental break’ and needed police assistance,” according to a Coral Springs Police arrest affidavit.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured her fleeing barefoot over a fence, calling for help in her final moments.
Lloyd was found face down in a nearby canal and rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead.
According to a police report, Evans told investigators he and Lloyd had fought over infidelity earlier in the evening and wrestled over a laptop computer – an incident during which she fell down. Lloyd had also screamed as Evans restrained her, according to the report.
Evans has been charged with misdemeanor domestic battery. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.
Formerly a lieutenant with Davie Fire Rescue, Evans is free on a $1,000 bond. A judge has ordered him to wear a GPS ankle device as part of a monitoring program, court records show.
On the GoFundMe page, Lloyd’s family and friends said she married Evans after a brief courtship and had less and less contact with friends and relatives.
“So many questions remain…Why did this happen? How could this happen to someone so beautiful, loving, and full of life?” her loved ones wrote. “Yet, something did happen. Someone entered Jessica’s life. Out of nowhere, Jessica became caught up in a new romance. After less than two months, Jessica moved out of her newly acquired apartment, became engaged, and was married. No family or friends were notified.
“For Jessica, who had always been open and connected, it was completely out of character. In the weeks and months that followed, contact with her dwindled until it was virtually gone. Those who loved her were deeply concerned, but silence surrounded her situation.”
Relatives said Lloyd’s life was marked by a love of adventure and care for others. She was an avid diver, angler, and horse rider. Professionally, she’d worked as a nurse and was praised by colleagues for her dedication and generosity.
Lloyd found contentment in spending time with friends, her beloved pets, and watching meteor showers with her mom, the fundraiser page states.
“She was radiant, beautiful, and her mischievous smile and infectious laughter was truly heartwarming,” Lloyd’s relatives wrote. “All who knew her speak now of her pure and loving soul, her sweet and giving heart. Jess hugged frequently, because she cared deeply.”
The family said they are planning to hold a “Celebration of Love” for Lloyd’s friends and relatives. They said their efforts are also aimed at raising awareness of domestic abuse and its impact.
