A new and improved fitness area is now open to the public at Riverside Park in Coral Springs.
The fitness area, which includes a walking path with fitness machines, misting stations, and obstacle courses, was completed and made accessible to the public on Nov. 20, according to the city. The area is part of a slate of improvements at the park at 205 Coral Ridge Dr. and comes as city officials seek to offer more amenities for park users in southern Coral Springs.
An estimated $1 million in pandemic relief funds – part of $20 million in American Rescue Plan Funding (ARPA) received by the city – is being used to pay for the improvements. The additions to the park include new restrooms, basketball courts, pickleball courts, water fountains, misting stations, a pickleball warm-up hitting court, seating, and shading, according to the city.
All of the projects are either completed, in progress or forthcoming, a city spokesperson said.
The installation of new playground equipment is also slated for the park. The cost of the new equipment is estimated at around $450,000, according to the city. Officials said that funding for the playground equipment is not from ARPA but rather from the city’s reoccurring capital fund for playground replacement.
Justin Ellis, Coral Springs’ Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, said of the new additions to Riverside Park:
“Following the isolation of the pandemic, residents desired new opportunities to get outside and get active. Riverside Park is primed to serve as the city’s centralized hub for fitness and outdoor enthusiasts with state-of-the-art fitness equipment, ten new pickleball courts — including the city’s first-ever stadium court, a renovated basketball court, and more. We feel fortunate to be the recipient of the American Rescue Plan Funding (ARPA) that is making these projects possible, and we are proud that this new endeavor is directly in line with our strategic priority to be an active, healthy community.”
