Jarel Decius needed a bicycle to get around and to get to and from school.
A senior at Coral Springs High, Decius received a new bicycle from the school’s holiday bike drive, organized by English teacher Kawana Jones.
“I needed a bicycle, and I am glad I got this one. I will ride it home today,” said Decius.
Jones, who sponsors the club Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders, worked with members to collect toy donations and gift cards.
Students and teachers could participate by purchasing a Walmart gift card that Jones used to buy the new bicycles and clothing. About 200 students donated gift cards or brought in toys for children. Eight teachers contributed by purchasing directly from a registry created on Walmart. The Coral Springs Police Department helped by distributing the toys collected by students through their toy drive, along with six bicycles. The remaining bicycles were distributed at the school.
“I was very proud that so many students donated to this campaign. I was pleased that teachers also donated. I have extended the registry to the end of the school year,” said Jones.
Jones decided to create a campaign to collect bicycle donations because too many students were receiving tardy notices for arriving late to school. “Because the drive was successful, I want to continue because there are many students who live within two miles of the schools who don’t qualify for a school bus and struggle to get to school on time,” said Jones. “We will try to provide more bicycles to students who need one.”
