Some Coral Springs businesses, boat, and recreational vehicle owners would lose parking access under a proposal scheduled to be voted on at Wednesday’s city commission meeting.
The city’s Planning and Zoning Board recently granted approval to a zoning change that would allow a 4.88-acre property to become a storage facility for trucks and trailers belonging to a large-scale, national tenant. The site at 12101 Northwest 42nd St., located in Coral Springs’ industrial park, is currently used by an estimated 83 businesses and over 200 residents to store their boats, commercial vehicles, and recreational vehicles, local business owners said.
Records show the business at the site is called Sawgrass Storage. Under the proposal, the new 111-space storage site would be unmanned and secured by an electric security gate, city records show.
The property owner, AGI 42nd Street Owner, LLC, intends to lease the parking area to a yet-to-be-announced national tenant rather than the current customers, the records state.
The plan has drawn concerns from residents and business owners who currently pay to use the property. They say they will be left without a place to legally park their work trucks and other commercial vehicles, boats, and RVs.
Spiro Edgos, owner of Bin Doctor Sanitizing Service, said he has parked three commercial vehicles at the property for seven years.
“It doesn’t look good; you’re kicking out all these small businesses and residents who have nowhere else to go,” Edgos said, citing the city’s tight restrictions on boat, RV, and commercial vehicle parking.
“If we can’t park our trucks, then we might have to move our business.”
Edgos said the city is trying to find a way to help solve the issue. One possible strategy, he said, would be for the city to lift some of the restrictions on parking commercial vehicles in the industrial park, where spaces could be leased.
“There’s a lot of space there that we could use to park if we were allowed to,” Edgos said.
Wednesday’s commission meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 9500 W. Sample Road.
