Students at James Hunt Elementary School in Coral Springs have been promoting peace with various fun and educational activities over the past week.
On Thursday, September 25, a group of fifth graders under the direction of art teacher Debi London painted rocks with messages of peace. They will be placed in a rock garden for students and teachers to go and spend time in reflection.
“My goal is to spread kindness in the home, school, and community through the arts. We are celebrating acts of kindness,” said London. On Friday, Hunt students will plant pinwheels for peace in the butterfly garden as part of the Peace Across Broward Day.
Students and staff will be encouraged to wear white to represent peace, unity, and hope for one another. Earlier in the week, students recited the Peace Pledge and created posters and poems that promoted peace and tolerance among themselves. “We want to encourage peace and being kind to one another,” said Assistant Principal Tamala Vaughn.
Hunt’s participation is part of the Broward County Public Schools’ celebration, known as Choose Peace/Stop Violence Week, from September 22-26. This year’s theme is “Speak Life. End Bullying,” according to information from Broward Schools.
