A Coral Springs public library worker has been hospitalized with COVID-19, Coral Springs Talk has learned.
The sick county employee works at the Northwest Regional Library branch, 3151 N. University Dr., according to a source with knowledge of the situation, who did not want to be identified because of potential professional repercussions.
Unlike many large municipalities, Broward County does not publicly disclose COVID infections among its employee ranks. The source said that no signage or other announcement had been made to library patrons about the employee’s infection, and the library is maintaining regular hours and services.
“While we do not discuss the specifics of employee medical details, we do follow a process should an employee at any of our library locations test positive for COVID-19,” said Stephen Grubb, Public Information Officer for the county’s Libraries Division. “If that staff member has been in the building during the past seven days, any areas of the library where they worked would be sanitized. This is a fairly quick process and would not affect the operating hours of the library.”
Grubb said staff and customers must wear masks and maintain a distance of six feet at all times while inside a Broward County Library building. But there is no mandatory testing in place for staff.
“In the event that a staff member tested positive for COVID-19, staff members they have had prolonged contact with would be notified,” said Grubb.
Miami-Dade County this week announced it would require most employees who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 to be tested every week, a response to the statewide surge in COVID infections.
Florida reported 22,783 new COVID-19 cases on Friday; the highest number ever recorded during the pandemic. At least 13,427 people are hospitalized with the virus statewide, also a pandemic record, according to federal data.
The state on Friday also reported 199 new COVID deaths, records show.
