For the second time in her career, Coral Springs pro golfer Lexi Thompson competed in the Summer Olympics.
The 26-year-old came in 33rd overall (-4) and was one of 39 women to finish under par through the four rounds in Toyko. Thompson finished 14 shots back of American Nelly Korda, who won one of the USA’s 39 gold medals this summer.
It was an eventful week for her caddie, Jack Fulgham after he had to step away on Day 1 due to heat exhaustion. LPGA Director of Player Services Donna Wilkins replaced Fulgham before NBC’s Drew Hinsley took over to assist the young star.
Despite the result, Thompson said it was an honor before the tournament even to participate.
“Making it to Rio was a very big deal, especially with golf not being [included] for such a long time; it was just a big deal for the sport,” Thompson told Thrillist. “But to be able to go back, put on my country’s colors, and represent, there’s just nothing like it. To be surrounded by the best of the best athletes, it’s an amazing feeling.”
It was an absolute honor to represent my country again in the @Olympics 🇺🇸 Congrats to @NellyKorda on winning that 🏅! And to everyone that made the Olympics 👏🏼 #specialweek pic.twitter.com/antheNjFOT

Thompson previously came in 19th place in her inaugural Olympic debut in 2016. Still, the talented golfer has had a remarkable career so far. She was the youngest player ever to win on the LPGA Tour at 16 and appeared in the US Open for the first time at 12 years old.
Thompson’s lone major came in 2014 but has finished second in both the US Open and Evian Championship, and came in third place Women’s PGA championship.
