Authorities said that a Coral Springs Police Officer was hurt in a crash early Tuesday when a vehicle carrying three fleeing car burglary suspects crashed into his marked patrol car near Kensington Circle.
The officer suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Broward Health Coral Springs, said Coral Springs Police Sgt. Ernesto Bruna.
He was treated and released.
“He’s going to be OK,” Bruna said of the officer.
Police first got word of attempted car burglaries in the area around 3:10 a.m., when they received a call about possible burglars trying car handles off of 4800 Kensington Circle, police said.
The burglary suspects found an unlocked car with a key fob left inside, entered the car, and started to drive away, according to police.
Patrol units set up a perimeter and saw their vehicle attempting to leave the area at a high rate of speed. That vehicle then struck the officer’s patrol car and drove on, eventually crashing again after a short pursuit, police said.
The three suspected car burglars bailed out of the vehicle and were taken into custody, police said.
K-9 units and a Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter were used to track them during a search, police said.
Detectives and crime scene investigators took witness statements Tuesday morning, and charges against the three suspects were pending.
“This is a reminder to grab your FOB and lock your vehicle doors,” the police department said in a Facebook post about the incident.
