Coral Springs High’s athletic director was arrested in a widening Broward school gym rental scheme involving unauthorized basketball tournaments, police said.
According to Broward County Sheriff’s Office investigation records, Brandon Wesley, 48, who had served as Coral Springs High School’s athletic director since 2019 and also worked as head of security, was arrested May 7 on charges of organized scheme to defraud $20,000 or less and grand theft over $10,000.
A day later, Cedric L. Smith, 57, a Coral Springs resident and assistant boys basketball coach at Boyd Anderson High School, was arrested in a related case. Smith is charged with an organized scheme to defraud $20,000 or less and grand theft less than $10,000.
The arrests are part of a widening investigation into Broward County Public Schools employees accused of allowing outside organizations to use school gyms for under-the-table basketball tournaments without district approval.
According to Wesley’s arrest affidavit, Broward Schools Police began investigating possible fraudulent activity involving school facility rentals in June 2025. Detectives said the district uses Facilitron, an online system that allows community members to book school facilities while helping administrators manage requests, schedules, payments, security, liability, and revenue.
Investigators allege Wesley and others bypassed that process by making private arrangements with outside basketball groups.
The affidavit states Wesley rented out a school gym without following proper channels and received Zelle payments from another coach who had arranged the rentals. Detectives wrote that bank records showed Wesley benefited financially while exposing the district to “severe liability and safety concerns.”
Investigators allege Wesley took part in illicit basketball tournaments on April 6, April 13, May 17–18, and June 1, 2025. According to the affidavit, Wesley received Zelle payments tied to the use and cleaning of the gym.
Detectives said the district lost $8,900 in potential rental revenue for those dates, while the arrest warrant lists the alleged value connected to Wesley’s case as $11,090.
Smith’s arrest affidavit lays out similar allegations involving Boyd Anderson High School and another school facility.
Wesley’s arrest comes months after previous similar arrests in Broward, including Coral Springs High School girls basketball coaches Brenton Hankerson and Donald Calloway, who were arrested in connection with the gym rental investigation. Both are expected to go through misdemeanor diversion programs rather than face convictions.
Four other Broward school employees were arrested earlier this year on similar allegations. The tournaments allegedly took place at multiple schools, including Coral Springs High and Hollywood Hills High.
