Coral Springs High School’s track and field team had the chance to host a meet and saw the boys team come in first while the girls came in second.
On Wednesday, the Colts competed against Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Coral Springs Charter, Monarch, and Deerfield Beach.
Head Coach Brantley Barr says it’s been a great start with many freshmen and sophomores on both squads.
“We’ve spent the first five weeks practicing in the parking lot while the track was being resurfaced, but they’ve worked hard and are getting great results,” Coach Barr said.
Boys Team
The boys finished with 142 points, 42 more than Marjory Stoneman Douglas. CSHS also won six events, with Jeffrey Belizaire winning the 800 and 1600 meters.
Michael McFarlin won the shot put and discus while Garth Lewis, Trejon Monereau, Joshua Rose, Zakai McKenzie finished first in the 4 x 100 relay race. The Colts’ other relay teams of Lewis, Charles Green, Joshua Rose, Ashton Piersol, and Tariq Murray came in second. Darnell Charite and Lucas Penaloza came in third in the 1600 meter and shot put, respectively.
Girls Team
In addition to placing second, the girl’s team won three events. Shaquielea Alvaranga won the 300 hurdles. Josefine Majdoch finished first in the high jump, and Hannah Williams took first in the discus.
Alvaranga, Majdoch, and Melanie Bobadilla placed second in their other events. Angelica Macarulay finished in the top four in a pair of events, while CSHS had to relay teams finish third as well.
Next, the Colts will have a special meet when they participate in the Walter Dix Relays on Saturday, March 5. Walter was a 2004 graduate who went onto FSU and became one of the most decorated college track athletes. He won two Olympic bronze medals in 2008 and two silvers at the World Championships in 2011 and is a major sponsor to the program.
