A man who allegedly pulled a firearm on his brother during a dispute over bathroom privileges now faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
On August 13, the Coral Springs Police Department responded to a residence near the 300 block of 118th Avenue in response to reports of an aggravated assault with injuries involving a firearm.
According to the police report, officers encountered a man, later identified as Frank Kim, 41, of Coral Springs, who claimed that the altercation began when his brother returned home and requested to use the bathroom.
Explaining his side of the story, Frank alleged to officers that he was in the process of cleaning the bathroom and asked his brother, the victim, to wait. This led to a verbal argument between the two siblings that escalated into a potentially deadly encounter.
Frank alleged that his brother began throwing various household items, including a speaker. In an attempt to protect himself, he swatted away the speaker, resulting in an injury to his right thumb.
According to records, Frank claimed that he drew his firearm as a last resort in self-defense, but he denied racking the gun or pointing it at his brother.
After speaking with Frank, officers interviewed the victim, who offered a different account of the eve. They explained that as the argument ensued, both individuals threw items at each other and that Frank had drawn a firearm, racking it and pointing it in his direction while making threats.
In fear for his life, the victim told police he fled the residence and called 911. The police report notes the sibling’s mother was present during the incident.
After investigating the incident and interviewing all parties involved, including the brother’s parents, police determined there was probable cause to believe that Frank committed the offense of aggravated assault with a firearm and that his actions were not entirely in self-defense.
Frank Kim was taken into custody and transported to Broward Health Coral Springs for treatment and medical clearance for his right thumb injury and reported abdominal pain.
He was transported to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail upon clearance.
