Award-winning author Richard Wickliffe has released his first nonfiction book, You Paid for This: My 25 Years Investigating Insurance Crimes.
Drawing on his two decades of experience managing investigative teams for one of the world’s largest insurance carriers, Wickliffe provides an in-depth look at the often unseen world of insurance fraud and its far-reaching impact.
Wickliffe, a graduate of Coral Springs High School and Florida Atlantic University, lived in the city for over 45 years before recently moving to Deerfield Beach. His career placed him at the center of Special Investigation Units (SIUs), teams tasked with uncovering and addressing fraudulent insurance claims.
His book recounts a variety of cases, including burglaries, art thefts, arson-for-profit schemes, and incidents involving human trafficking and organized crime. Wickliffe also details the use of SIUs in high-profile cases, such as Miami’s Pain & Gain double-murder investigation, which involved kidnapping and extortion.
According to the author, the book provides a factual account of how insurance fraud operates and explores the complexities of these investigations. Wickliffe includes cases ranging from routine to extraordinary, such as sunken cars concealing criminal activity and the challenges of detecting staged deaths.

John Askins, former Director of Florida’s Division of Insurance Fraud, described it as “entertaining and informative,” while Glenn Shapiro, retired President of Allstate Insurance Company, emphasized the economic impact of fraud on consumers. Fred Burkhardt, a retired Supervisory Special Agent with the National Insurance Crime Bureau, highlighted the book’s educational value, noting its focus on the social and economic consequences of insurance fraud.
