Coral Springs will soon have a new high-end lifestyle and fitness center.
During the May 20 meeting, the commission approved on first reading two ordinances that will allow Life Time, a national company that runs fitness centers, to build a large complex on 13.11 acres located north of Heron Bay Boulevard and west of Coral Ridge Drive on two parcels of land.
The first ordinance amends the Coral Springs Future Land Use Plan Map for the land, and the second ordinance rezones the parcels from golf course to community business, according to city information.
One of the parcels on the western side of the site is owned by the North Springs Improvement District (NSID). The easternmost parcel, which contains most of the former golf club, including the clubhouse, belongs to the City of Parkland. According to city records, Life Time is under agreement with both NSID and the City of Parkland to acquire the parcels to develop the site.
The property previously was the parking lot and clubhouse for the Heron Bay Golf Club and has been unused for several years. According to city information, the city of Parkland will demolish the building.
Life Time plans to build a two-story, 86,750-square-foot athletic club featuring outdoor pools, pickleball courts, a spa, and other high-end amenities. Monthly membership fees will range from $300 to $400, according to Adam Pogue, who presented to the commission.
“We are like a country club without a golf course,” said Pogue.
Commissioners were pleased and spoke favorably about the plans. Commissioner Shawn Cerra said the fitness center will benefit the city.
