Coral Springs Man Accused in $3.5 Million Sweepstakes Scam Targeting Over 100 Seniors

Evans Class Brown is accused in a $3.5 million sweepstakes scam that targeted more than 100 victims, many of them seniors.

According to federal investigation records, Brown, 27, of Coral Springs faces charges including wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering in connection with a scheme prosecutors say caused victims to lose more than $3.5 million.

According to federal court records, Brown is one of several defendants accused of convincing victims they had won large cash prizes through sweepstakes, then telling them they first needed to pay taxes, fees or other expenses before receiving the supposed winnings.

Federal prosecutors said victims sent money to members of the group via mail and wire transfer. More than 100 people were allegedly victimized, with prosecutors saying a “substantial portion” were senior citizens.

Authorities allege the defendants then laundered the proceeds, keeping some of the money for themselves while sending additional funds to co-conspirators in Jamaica.

The case is being prosecuted in federal court in Charleston, South Carolina.

Brown was taken into custody on August 19 by police and transported to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail.
