When students return to school this fall, they will see a variety of new food items in their cafeterias.
On July 30, Elizabeth Seeley, a registered dietitian, made a presentation at Coral Glades High School on ten new food offerings that public school students will see. Those who came were encouraged to sample the culinary items.
Unlike the old offerings of mystery meat and unappetizing vegetables, the food selections are more appetizing. School district dietitians chose the new entrees after listening to feedback from student focus groups.
The new food items will include Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, the Broward bowl consisting of chicken tenders, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, beef and broccoli, pretzel dogs, and cheese tortellini with meat sauce. There will also be chicken and cheese enchilada empanadas, taco crisps, and other items.
“We had focus groups made up of students, and we listened to what they told us regarding what they wanted to eat for breakfast and lunch,” said Seeley. “They said they wanted more pasta and vegan dishes. Our chicken Caesar salad is one of the most popular meals, and we will be offering that in all our schools.”
There will be a larger variety of food options and à la carte offerings in high schools. Elementary and middle schools will have more options than previously.. There will be entirely vegan dishes available to students and more options from various cultures. All the food items offered in school cafeterias meet USDA standards, according to Seeley.
According to Seeley, a key goal is to ensure that all students have access to appealing and nourishing food, which supports both academic and personal success.
This fall, every Broward public school student can receive a free breakfast. Those from families who qualify can receive free lunches and, in a few schools, free dinners. The application can be found here.
