Coral Springs resident Elijah Perez celebrated his 100th wrestling match victory at a large dual meet, the South Broward Bulldog Brawl, on January 25.
A junior at Coral Springs Charter School, Perez, 16, has won 27 matches this season and hopes to qualify for the upcoming state championship meet. He wrestles in the 138-pound weight class.
“This was a huge win for me. I love wrestling and competing against tough opponents,” said Elijah.
According to him, to be a successful wrestler, one must be consistent in training, eat healthy, and put in a lot of effort. “I want to get better and wrestle in college,” he said.
His father and Coral Springs Charter coach Eric Perez is proud of his son and said he has been a strong wrestler since his freshman year. “He is very self-disciplined and puts in a lot of extra effort. I don’t have to ask him to train; he does it himself.”
The Panthers wrestlers earned a 3-3 record in the Bulldog Brawl and defeated Nova, Miami Coral Park, and Flanagan. According to Eric, Preston Lindsay had a 6-0 record in the meet.
“The team is progressing rapidly, and it’s been fun watching this rebuilding year work itself out. I’m super excited for my son Elijah notching his milestone of 100 career victories with 67 coming by way of pin,” said Eric.
The Coral Springs High wrestling team competed in the Brawl and earned second place, losing to tournament host South Broward 47-36. The Colts were led by Shai Keery 6-0 and J’vier Romeus 6-0. According to Eric, J.P. Taravella High placed in the top 4 and was led by Jacob Rosen 6-0 and Victor Dixon.
Next for the Panthers is the Titan Tussle at Slam Academy Miami on February 1.
