One simple glance at Bryce Walker’s sports action photo, and the reason he finished first in a national photo competition becomes obvious.
Bryce, 17, who is entering his senior year at Coral Springs Charter School, was one of more than 1,000 competitors in The School Photographers of America + SONY Student Photo Contest. The Sony corporation sponsored the competition.
His winning entry is of a fellow Coral Springs Charter School swimming team member, Brian Hamilton, competing in the 100-yard butterfly stroke. The swimmer’s look of emotion and intensity stands out along with the swirling, white foaming bubbles directly in front of him.
Bryce found out on May 9 that he was selected as a finalist in the sports action category, and was informed on May 20 that he had won. His first reaction: “I was happy,” he said. “I thought I had a chance, but I wasn’t sure. There were a lot of amazing photos.”
One of his teachers, Samantha Harwell, played a crucial role in fostering his love for photography. She teaches three subjects at the school: Broadcast TV, Yearbook, and AICE Media Studies. She said they learned about the national contest back in April when they were attending a state high school photography contest in Orlando. And in case you were wondering, Bryce’s swimming photo took home top honors (Best of the Best) there as well. “It was one of those perfect moments,” Harwell said.
Harwell said Bryce, who lives in the Cypress Park section of Coral Springs, is very technically minded. “He knows all the ins and outs of tech stuff,” she said. “Cameras became another avenue.”
He began taking pictures of the football team, she said, adding that he not only enjoys taking pictures but is also interested in the technical aspects of photography.
“I consider it a hobby,” Bryce said. “What I like most is the creativity, the action, it’s fast.”

For his first-place finish, Bryce received a Sony A7C camera at an award ceremony held June 5 at his school. He was presented with the camera by Brian Fox, owner of Fox-Mar studios. Fox said their company is a member of the School Photographers of America, an organization that advocates on behalf of school photography nationwide. Fox-Mar Studios has been doing school photography since 1974, and they presented the camera because Coral Springs Charter School is one of their clients.
Having a professional background in photography, Fox said Bryce’s winning photo is a perfect example of what’s taught in photo journalism. “It has to tell a story with one image,” he said.
In addition to taking action and capturing fast-paced photos, the young photographer is also fascinated with broadcasting and serves as the executive producer of his school’s broadcast show.
