The Coral Springs Police Department has a new vehicle for deployment during large events.
At the June 17 meeting, the commission approved a $510,277 contract with Daimler Trucks North America for a Joint Information Center (JIC) vehicle.
The JIC is a specialized mobile communications and coordination platform for public information, interagency coordination, and emergency communications during large-scale incidents, planned events, and disasters. The JIC is a grant project funded by the Urban Area Security Initiative, not tax dollars. It replaces a previous unit that reached the end of its useful life, according to the Coral Springs Police. This grant project is a partnership with the Florida Department of Emergency Management along with the Urban Area Security Initiative, according to Ryan Himmel, Coral Springs spokesperson.
The unit serves as a self-contained, deployable command-and-communications asset that enables government agencies, first responders, and public information officers to operate from a centralized location in the field.
The project replaces an aging regional asset that was removed from service and addresses a critical capability gap in South Florida’s emergency response framework. Once completed, the vehicle will serve as a regional resource capable of supporting multiple jurisdictions throughout South Florida, according to Himmel.
