Coral Springs attorney Andrew Weinstein is serving as a public delegate for the U.S. during the current session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to the White House.
Weinstein, a Parkland resident whose law office is in Coral Springs, was one of three private citizens nominated for the position by President Joe Biden. Public delegates represent their countries in meetings at the U.N., including meetings of the U.N. Security Council, and work with other countries, government officials, and organizations on various initiatives.
Weinstein is the managing attorney at the Weinstein Law Firm, a position he has held since 1996. He is also a major fundraiser and bundler for Democrats and an outspoken proponent of gun safety reforms.
“I’m honored to announce that I’ve been nominated by @POTUS to serve as a Public Delegate of the United States to the General Assembly of the United Nations,” Weinstein wrote on Twitter last week, shortly before his confirmation. “I look forward to serving at [the U.N.] in this new role.”
In 2013, President Barack Obama appointed Weinstein to the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, where he led the effort to expand the administration’s Turnaround Arts program to Broward County Public schools.
In 2016, Weinstein helped organize and participated in a delegation to Cuba as part of the administration’s efforts to improve U.S.-Cuba relations. Weinstein also served as a key liaison to the Jewish community during the rollout of the Iran Nuclear Deal.
In 2017, President Obama appointed Weinstein to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum board. Weinstein served on the Finance Committee for President Obama and was the Finance Chair of the Florida Democratic Party.
He is currently the chair of the Lawyers Council for the Democratic National Committee.
Weinstein has said he is particularly proud of his work advocating gun safety reforms with victims and activists in Parkland and across the country.
“Any member of congress who opposes gun safety reforms should spend a day sitting through the Parkland shooter’s trial,” he said in a recent post. “Make them listen to the medical examiner’s testimony and bone-chilling screams of terrified students before placing gun manufacturers’ profits over people’s lives.”
During President Biden’s campaign, Weinstein was a member of the campaign’s Gun Safety Policy Committee, among others, and served as Co-Chair of Lawyers for Biden.
He lives with his wife Anne and has two children.
