Coral Springs Charter’s wrestling team is welcoming in a new coach for the 2021-22 season.
Coach Eric Perez will be taking over for Dan Dunham, who will lead a relatively young team after last season when Terell Taylor reached the state finals.
Coach Perez feels like his team had a great offseason training with Steve Mocco at the Mocco Wrestling Club.
“I’m excited to start this season, and it’s such a great honor for me to lead this great group of young athletes,” said Coach Perez. “I would like to thank Mr. Springer, Mr. Higgins, Athletic Director Kate Hearn, long-time Head Coach Dan Dunham, and the entire Coral Springs Charter community for giving me this tremendous opportunity.”
Originally from Middletown, New York, Perez wrestled throughout high school and was coached by New Hall of Fame wrestling coach Paul Cummings and Randy Keys. He then attended SUNY Orange in New York and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. Perez has been serving the community as a Law Enforcement Officer for the last 18 years.
Despite his great success as a wrestler, Perez attained a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a Brown Belt in Russian Sambo. With his wife and four kids, Perez lives in Coral Springs and previously coached wrestling at Abundant Life Christian Academy in Margate.
The Panthers will return some key wrestlers in Brock Wilson, Griffin Perko, David Clark, D’Angelo Celestin, Keon Taylor, Preston Lindsay, and Michael Mocco this season.
Some of the younger wrestlers are Brayden Derstine, Peter Mocco, and Jaiden Valentin, and West Marshall, Iowa transfer Hunter Perez, who should all have an immediate impact on the outcome of this season.
The Panthers will begin their regular season competition at the Cardinal Gibbons High School wrestling tournament on Saturday, December 4. The Panthers will then host a dual home meet against Cardinal Gibbons and Cardinal Newman on January 19.
