Michael Mocco of the Coral Springs Charter wrestling team had one of the best seasons in school history.
The eighth-grader finished third in states after winning his opening two matches, including a 17-2 victory against Bonita Springs High School.
Mocco fell for only the third time all season against Lance Schyck of Lemon Bay High School (Englewood). Schyck was a two-time State Championship and has gone 122-1 in the last three seasons.
Mocco won his final two matches to finish third in the state. Despite not winning a State Championship, Head Coach Eric Perez is confident this year’s experience will help him in the future.
“I believe that Michael now knows what he is capable of and that he has the tools necessary to do some very special things in this sport,” coach Perez said.
Mocco, the son of former Olympian Steve Mocco and three-time Pan-Champion, finished the season with a record of 47-3 and will still have four years left of varsity wrestling. He finished second in Districts and also won his first Regional Championship.
