A Coral Springs man died from injuries he suffered in a two-vehicle crash in Lauderdale Lakes on the Fourth of July, authorities said.
Walter Cuellar, 44, of 9044 NW 28th Dr., was driving south on North State Road 7 at a high rate of speed in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler SUV as he approached the intersection at Northwest 41st Street around 1:20 a.m., according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
At the same time, driver Leahcim Corniffe, 22, and passenger Cassandra Dolce, 21, were also traveling south on the same road in a 2010 Honda Accord sedan, just ahead of Cuellar.
Near the intersection, the front driver’s side of Cuellar’s Jeep struck the rear passenger side of Corniffe’s Honda, causing the Jeep to veer southeast over the median, across the northbound lanes of North State Road 7, and over the raised curb along the east side of the roadway, according to BSO.
Cuellar’s Jeep continued south over the sidewalk and struck a fire hydrant. It then sideswiped a concrete bus stop before colliding with a wall, which caused it to roll over.
As the Jeep began to roll, the roof and hood of the vehicle struck a large traffic pole in the northeast corner of the intersection, where it came to a final rest on the passenger side, authorities said.
According to investigators, after the initial impact, Corniffe maintained control of the Honda and came to a controlled stop near the intersection of Northwest 41st Street.
Paramedics took Cuellar to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Detectives said Corniffe and Dolce were unhurt, remained at the scene, and cooperated with investigators.
The investigation is ongoing, according to BSO.
