Despite dropping their first two games of the season to two of the top teams in Broward County, J.P. Taravella boys basketball picked up their first win Thursday night against Coral Glades.
This was also the first win for Head Coach Eric Kapel, who took over for Curtis Bonny earlier this year. They now move to 1-2 despite their losses earlier this season against Fort Lauderdale and Hallandale High School.
“It meant a lot to me to get this first win, but I wanted it more for the kids,” said Kapel. “It was a rivalry game, and it was a packed gym, so for them to buy into the game plan and get a win, I’m really happy for them.
Coming into the game averaging 19 points per game, Samuel Smith had 14 points. Jordan Pratt added 11, while Jordan Evans had 10.
Timothy Bozeman, and Graysen Samuel, combined for nine points, and Nickson Cleriser had two. The rest of the Trojans team consists of Caleb Theodule, John Reed, Vincent Lancifort, Jordan Arriaga, Kani Poisson, and Juvens Atoulon.
The Trojans are coming off a tough season where they only won seven games. They will look for their second victory on Monday, Dec.5, against South Plantation High School at 7:30 p.m. The Paladins are 2-1 with wins over Palm Beach Lakes and Stranahan but fell to Benjamin High School. A season ago, South Plantation knocked J.P. Taravella out of the playoffs with a 76-68 win.
Coral Glades continues to play well to start the season. After winning three games in their season-opening tournament, they added two more wins this week before falling for only the second time this season. Their next match will be against Miramar High School on Monday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
