Coral Springs and Parkland high school bowlers are competitive and passionate about their sport.
The J.P. Taravella bowling team is doing well midseason and is looking forward to the upcoming county and district meets.
According to coach Greg Mason, the Trojans have a 17-3 record and recently defeated Coral Glades.
“We have been doing well, and we just have to continue winning matches,” he said.
Zachary Kimbrell is the leading bowler for Taravella, who has bowled a perfect 300-game. Marvin Nixon is also a team leader with 279 games.
“It takes dedication and effort to be a good bowler,” said Kimbrell.
Taravella does not have a girls’ team, so the only female bowler, Chyanne Van Winkle, bowls on the boys’ team.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boys bowling team has performed well with a 20-2 record. Coach Mike Gregory is proud of the Eagles.
“It takes dedication and a willingness to work toward improvement to be a good bowler,” he said.
Gregory said Vincent Chiullo and his son Bryce are doing well this season.
The Coral Glades team has improved. According to coach Joe Catalano, the girls are 11-9, and the boys are 12-8. His son Anthony Catalano, with a 196, and Lane Brainard, with 235, are the leading bowlers for the boys. Crystal Carreras, with 152, and Kylee Boyd, with 130, are the leading bowlers for the girls.
“The girls are improving, and the boys are more consistent,” said the coach.
The Coral Springs Charter girls’ team is 20-0, and according to coach Andrew Groothuis, Faith Tucker and Audrey Gold are the top girls’ bowlers.
“If they keep practicing and put in the effort, they will continue to win,” said Groothuis.
According to Groothuis, the boys are a very young team of mostly middle school students. Shawn Robinson is the top-boy bowler.
The Coral Springs High School boys’ and girls’ bowling teams are smaller. According to coach Berta Reed, the leading boys’ bowlers are Logan Howe and Giovanni Lugo. The leading girls’ bowlers are Aracely Soto, Kiara Hampton, and Liana Guillen.
