It has been a wild season for the J.P. Taravella boys basketball team.

They not only had to face COVID-19, but they also couldn’t play any home games due to damage to their home court.

On Monday, JPT held their senior night against Elite Academy at the FTX Arena — home of the Miami Heat.

The Trojans ended up falling 55-53 but played well against a team that had a record of 17-3 this year.

“Playing and coaching in the FTX Arena was a dream was a dream come true,” said Head Coach Curtis Bonny. “Both teams got a reality check and newfound appreciation for the NBA three-point line. Once the initial jitters were out, we all got back to playing our games.”

Still, the Trojans had the chance to honor six terrific seniors before their game in Fernando Garrido, Jeremy Stewart, James Dixson, Arturo Meeks, Dorsainvil Jean Jr., and Le’jaugh Franklyn.

Garrido, Dixson, and Meeks combined for 41 points.

“I truly love and enjoy coaching this group of kids,” Coach Bonny added. “They used each adversity as an opportunity to grow as a student-athlete and human being in general. They truly embodied our team motto, “Get Better Every Day.”

The Trojans are now 7-13 this season and will have two more games in the regular season before they play South Plantation High School in the District Championship on Tuesday, February 8.
