When Christine Bleecker saw the shooting of Renee Good by ICE agents in Minneapolis, she wanted to do something.
A leader of the Joyful Resistance South Florida movement, she used social media to call for a demonstration, the “Stop Ice Terror Protest,” at the southeast corner of University Drive and Sample Road on the evening of January 9th.
“I said, let’s gather and express our outrage about this killing and the abuses of the Trump administration. We need to go out and demonstrate what ICE is doing. This is how we can work for change,” said Bleecker of Coral Springs.
Throughout the evening, people came and stood along University Drive, holding signs protesting ICE and the Trump administration’s actions.
Jennifer Bakowski, of Margate, a leader of Joyful Resistance, said it is important for people to stand up to the abuse of ICE against ordinary people. She said ICE agents are not real trained law enforcement professionals, but the Trump administration has empowered them to abuse honest working people. “We are a grassroots organization working to stop ICE,” she said.
Trisha Bordenkircher, of Margate, said she participated in the demonstration because she opposes ICE’s aggression.
